Some ideas for new directions with this cover:

The original was very dark - my first instinct was that it would be hard to see the cover, especially if viewers are browsing covers of comics as thumbnails. So the first thing I'd do is add some bright values back into the piece, and then darken the background. The characters would be bright and in the forefront, against a dark background. 

Then I'd add some more space around the characters to give them a bit more elbow room.

Finally, the colors are very different and very bright and contrasting, especially when you consider all the details in the picture. So I thought the picture needed to scale back - either in the details, the color, or the values. For a more realistic feel, I'd drop the saturation on them and move the purple towards blue, but keep a few bright highlights here and there. I'd also replace the pure gray with a color shade - maybe blue for a cooler color, or orange/brown if there's firelight illuminating the scene.
